Jimmy Dimora appeals his federal conviction

(Cincinnati) - Former Cuyahoga County commissioner Jimmy Dimora is seeking an early release from prison.

Dimora, who was convicted in a wide-ranging public corruption case in Cleveland, is appealing his federal conviction, arguing that his trial was unfair.

In an appeal filed in the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Saturday, ex-career politician asked that his conviction on 32 bribery-related offenses be overturned.

The 57-year-old Dimora, also a former Democratic Party chairman in Cleveland, is serving a 28-year sentence in a federal West Virginia prison.

In his appeal, Dimora argues that the judge in his case improperly prevented him from showing evidence to the jury, that he never hid the fact that he was receiving items of value.

The appeal argues that Dimora disclosed the items in publicly filed ethics reports and that he should get a new trial.
