Two suspects charged in quadruple homicide

(Summit County) - Two suspects are facing arraignment in the execution style deaths of 4 people in Akron.

Akron Police Department homicide detectives charged both Deshanon Haywood, 21, of Brittain Road and Derrick Brantley, 21, of Cornell Street, each with four counts of aggravated murder and four counts of aggravated robbery.

Lt. David Whiddon says Brantley and Haywood were already in custody, and were charged with obstruction of justice for providing false statements to homicide detectives during the investigation.

Deshanon Haywood was charged with obstructing justice on April 27, 2013. At that time, Haywood was incarcerated in the Summit County Jail on unrelated charges and has been incarcerated since that time.

Derrick Brantley was charged with obstructing justice on April 29, 2013 and has been incarcerated in the Summit County Jail as well.

Whiddon tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that says, as the investigation progressed, detectives were able to obtain more information that implicated them further. The suspects are to be in court Friday morning.

Whiddon says robbery still appears to be the motive in the killings, but The Akron Police Department is asking anyone with any additional information to call the Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490. Investigators are also trying to determine if others were involved in the crimes.

On April 18, 2013, one of the victim’s friends discovered the bodies of Kem Delaney, Maria Nash, Ronald Roberts, and Kiana Welch in the basement of 42 Kimlyn Circle.

Multiple officers, detectives and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.

Several interviews were conducted, evidence was collected and various records were examined.

The autopsy results revealed that each victim suffered multiple gunshots, including at least one gunshot to the head.
