Shelters from the cold

Shelters from the cold

(Cleveland) – The American Red Cross of Lorain County chapter on West River Road opened as a warming center Sunday because of the frigid conditions.

Red Cross communications manager Christine Moran says the center provides an opportunity for community members to come in out of the cold.

Moran reports more warming centers will open Monday and Tuesday in Cleveland, Medina, Lorain, Akron-Canton, and Mahoning County as even colder weather arrives.

She urges residents who are staying in their homes to be careful and use common sense especially when it comes to heating their houses.

Follow all safety precautions when using generators and portable heaters, and never warm a home with the kitchen stove. Moran says stove top fires are the number one cause of house fires.

On Sunday, the City of Elyria opened a warming center with the help of local partners at St. Mary Parish on Middle Avenue.

Mayor Holly Brenda says it will be in operation 24 hours a day at least through 8am on Wednesday.

Brenda tells WTAM the shelter will be safe and secure with food and beverages for people with low or no heat.

There are also cots, blankets, and sheets. Residents can bring their domestic pets if they are in cages.
