(Columbus) -- Ohio Governor John Kasich is granting a stay of execution to a death row inmate who wants to donate his organs to his ill relatives.
40-year old Ronald Phillips of Akron was slated to die via lethal injection Thursday for the rape and murder of his girlfriend's three-year old daughter 20 years ago.
Phillips' attorneys wrote in a letter to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on Monday that their client was "making this generous request without any conditions or expectations." The request was originally denied due to the late date it was made.
The stay is in effect until July 2nd to asses whether Phillips organs can be donated.
