Cleveland-area children enjoy trip to the

(Cleveland) - Kids from the Cleveland Clinic, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, and MetroHealth Medical Center boarded a United Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft for a flight to the “North Pole” at Hopkins Airport Saturday afternoon.

It was a one-of-a-kind holiday experience for 68 children suffering from various medical conditions.

United Airlines employees and other volunteers transformed Gate C18 into Santa’s winter wonderland to make the children’s holiday season extra special.

United General Manager Rich Lisser says the children and 25 family members boarded the aircraft which actually took off, flying over Cedar Point, which the amusement park turning its lights on to greet them.

The jet then landed at the "North Pole" where children were welcomed by Santa and Mrs. Claus, and they enjoyed face painting, crafts, food, a photo booth, presents, and fun.

Lisser tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, airport businesses were very generous in donating gifts, goods, food and other items to provide a wonderful distraction from ongoing medical treatment.

The "North Pole" flight has become an annual tradition at Hopkins Airport thanks to the dedicated employees at United Airlines.
