Police chase puts elementary school on lock-down

(Westlake) – Bassett Elementary School was briefly put in lock-down Tuesday morning as police chased a criminal suspect on foot.

Captain Guy Turner says 40-year-old Christopher Hampton was involved in two hit-skips in Westlake, and then bailed from his car and took off on foot.

At 9:10AM, a female caller reported the father of her child was following her on I-90 westbound from Cleveland and was deliberately striking her vehicle with his.

The victim pulled over once she entered Westlake; the suspect continued westbound, exited at Crocker Rd., struck two more vehicles, and then fled on foot near the Promenade.

A Westlake Service Dept. worker who was monitoring the police radio activity was able to give the suspect’s direction of travel to WPD dispatch.

Turner says they had Bassett Elementary lock the doors as a precaution. A call to parents reassured them that the kids were in no danger.

The lock-down was lifted just before 10:00 a.m.

Rocky River, Bay Village, and Avon PDs assisted in the incident, which ended when an Avon officer located Hampton at the Wendy’s restaurant on the NE corner of Crocker-Detroit Rds.

Hampton is currently in the Westlake City Jail; charges have not yet been determined.

No one was injured in the incident.
