(Auburn Twp., Geauga County) -- Two men who were believed to be fishing on Geauga County's LaDue Reservoir ended up in the water Thursday morning when their boat capsized, and they were rescued by a passing state trooper.
Mike Cardeman, the assistant fire chief in Auburn Township, tells WTAM 1100 that they got a call about 8:15 a.m. Thursday that a state trooper on the US 422 causeway over the reservoir saw the men in the water after their boat apparently capsized. The trooper threw a rope to the two men and pulled them to shore along the causeway.
Auburn fire crews then responded to finish the rescue. Cardeman says the two men checked out okay medically, and were not sent to the hospital. He says they were fortunate, given that the men had been in the water about a half hour, and hypothermia could have eventually set in. He also says that the reservoir's waters can get rough fairly quickly, making it a lot more dangerous than boaters may think.
The boat belonging to the two men was washed up against rocks along the causeway, and will be recovered later.
